The Islamic Army in Iraq issued a written statement rejoicing in what it termed its enemy’s “stagnant and moribund economy,” before throwing hurricanes and floods into the apocalyptic mix as further evidence of what it proclaimed to be divine intervention to bring about superpower decline.

The announcement was put out on Sept. 23, 2008 by the emir — leader –- of the I.A.I. according to IntelCenter, an intelligence organization which monitors terrorist groups, their broadcasts and statements.

He wrote: “The United States of America is experiencing a very difficult situation where tragedies are frequent and disasters are numerous at every level and in every sphere… its stagnant and moribund economy; and the successive losses which have put U.S. banks and insurance companies in the eye of the storm that ruined Lehman Brothers Bank, which has filed for bankruptcy along with many other banks.

“The U.S. Government was forced to pump tens of billions of dollars in order to bail out the biggest insurance company in the world a day before its bankruptcy.”

He added: “God causes His winds, hurricanes, torrential rain and floods to harm the United States,” before piling simile upon metaphor to round off the gloat: “The United States has become like a tower which is about to collapse and like a channel which is about to crack. Its pillars are shaky and its strings are undone: It is a cursed country that is doomed to destruction.”
